In a recent development that has stirred the NRL community, league legend Wally Lewis has criticized the Manly Sea Eagles for their handling of captain Daly Cherry-Evans’ contract situation. Lewis suggests that the club’s treatment of Cherry-Evans reflects a broader cultural issue within Manly, where players are celebrated during their tenure but face harsh scrutiny upon departure. He remarked, “They love them while they’re there and when they go, they really do put that boot in.”

This controversy follows Cherry-Evans’ announcement that he will leave the Sea Eagles after the 2025 season, a decision he claims has subjected him to a “nasty” smear campaign. Despite assertions from both Cherry-Evans and Manly’s CEO, Tony Mestrov, that there is no animosity between them, reports suggest underlying tensions, possibly linked to a strained relationship with coach Anthony Seibold.

The unfolding saga has prompted calls from other league greats for clarity. Darren Lockyer emphasized the need for Cherry-Evans to resolve his future promptly to mitigate distractions affecting both the player and the club. He stated, “The only way all of this speculation and the hypothetical smear campaign is going to die down is once we know where DCE is going.”

As the 36-year-old halfback’s future remains uncertain, several NRL clubs, including the Bulldogs, Broncos, Titans, Dragons, and Rabbitohs, have reportedly withdrawn from the race to secure his signature. This leaves the Roosters and Dolphins as potential destinations, though no official agreements have been announced. The situation continues to evolve, with fans and analysts keenly awaiting further developments.
