The 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola saw Max Verstappen clinch his second victory of the season, overtaking pole-sitter Oscar Piastri on the first lap and maintaining a commanding lead throughout the race.
Piastri, who had secured his third pole position of the season, admitted to braking too early, allowing Verstappen to seize the lead. Despite a strong qualifying performance, Piastri finished third, with teammate Lando Norris taking second place after overtaking Piastri in the closing laps.
Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve criticized McLaren’s strategy, suggesting the team should have instructed Piastri to let Norris pass earlier to challenge Verstappen.
Verstappen’s victory marks his 65th career win and ties Michael Schumacher for the most podiums with a single team. The result tightens the championship standings, with Piastri leading at 146 points, followed by Norris at 133 and Verstappen at 124.
As the season progresses, McLaren’s strategic decisions will be under scrutiny, especially with the next race in Monaco on the horizon.
